Biography
Soprano, Sophia Low is on a mission to connect with audiences through vocal artistry and authenticity. Focusing in opera, solo art song, and concert performance, she believes that her job is to tell stories through music, combining thought-provoking narratives with playful, but expressive vocality. She is an active performer currently based in Baltimore, Maryland and the Hudson Valley, New York.
Low has performed with the Gettysburg College Opera Workshop singing roles such as Casilda in The Gondoliers, Second Lady in The Magic Flute, and Ottavia in L’Incoronazione di Poppea. She has also been a featured soloist with the Gettysburg College choirs in works such as Vivaldi’s Gloria and John Rutter’s Gloria. In 2021, she was a winner at AMC NATS Student Auditions and placed third in her division in the 2021 NATS Eastern Region Student Auditions. Internationally, Low has performed in Orvieto, Italy with Orvieto Musica’s Art of Song program, where she experienced the joy of chamber music and working with other musicians who shared the same goal of connecting with each other and the audiences.
A strong advocate for inclusivity within the music world, Low is dedicated to programming and educating audiences on lesser-known composers such as Germaine Tailleferre and Augusta Holmés. In her undergraduate years, her musical studies along with her minor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies taught her how exclusive the western music canon truly is. Low is dedicated to using her instrument as a force for change to make the music world more representative of the people within it.
Low recently completed her Bachelor of Music in Performance at the Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College, studying under Dr. Susan Hochmiller. She is currently pursuing her Master of Music in Voice at the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University studying with Bill Sharp.
